Wild Thing

A hamlet of 9 cottages, 2 farms and a pub.

The dwellings of Beck Hole cluster around an old fording point on the Eller Beck, just before it meets West Beck to become Murk Esk and eventually the River Esk, flowing out to sea ten miles away at Whitby

In times past Beck Hole would have been a steep and deeply forested gorge, impassable except by following the course of the river and its tributaries.

It must have been explored by the Vikings as the name Beck Hole, and many other places hereabouts, are Norse by origin. Though I don't suppose they got their longboats up this far...they probably didn't pay for their beer either !

Generations of farmers, miners and engineers  have lived and worked and left their mark on the landscape in and around Beck Hole and made it the very special place it is today…come and see for yourself…
